As mentioned recently, satellite pioneer Gil Moore visited Lexington recently on his way to lecture at Morehead State University. While in Lexington, he provided an update on the polar orbiting passive atmospheric calibration satellite, or POPACS, a 3U Cubesat project that bears a similarity to the Starshine series. Like Starshine, this project will also engage ground observers, who will provide data that will ultimately help develop more robust collision avoidance techniques and contribute to the safety of orbiting crew and other spacecraft, as Gil Moore explains.
Gil was invited by his longtime colleague Bog Twiggs, the co-developer of the Cubesat standard, who is now a professor at the Morehead State University.
