The state of personal spaceflight

In a Space.com piece, Patricia Hynes, Director of the New Mexico Space Grant Consortium and the NASA Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) at New Mexico State University, takes stock of the personal spaceflight industry in advance of the Wirefly X-Prize Cup.

Haynes is also the coordinator of 2007 International Symposium for Personal Spaceflight, which will begin tomorrow and run through Thursday.

Space.com also briefly profiles two of the eight teams
entered in the Grumman Lunar Lander Challenge, Acuity and Armadillo.

NASA awards EPSCoR funds

As part of NASA's Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR), the agency has announced the award of $17 million to programs that support NASA's research priorities. A complete list of the 23 selected proposals may be found here.

Western Kentucky and the University of Kentucky received funds for research into "Efficacy of Countermeasures to Cardiovascular Deconditioning in Men and Women during Simulated Moon Explorations."

EPSCoR funds for space-related research available

Kentucky's NASA EPSCoR Program has announced a new funding opportunity for research supporting NASA's mandate to explore. The program works to develop collaborative ties between Kentucky researchers in higher education and NASA's Mission Directorates and Centers, and is part of the Kentucky Space Grant Consortium.

Over the course of three years, up to $500,000 is available. See the proposal instructions (Word document) and proposal budget form (Excel) for more. A non-binding letter of intent to propose is due by Friday, June 8. The proposal deadline is Wednesday, June 20.
